Porter
United Grand Lodge of England seeks a porter for the Building Services (Porter) department.
The duties and responsibilities will be many and varied, but will be to assist in the provision of a high-quality portering service for the building and a high-quality building support service for the users of the building.
Background
UGLE is the governing body of Freemasonry in England, Wales, the Channel Islands, the Isles of Man consisting of 48 Provinces roughly based on the old county boundaries and 32 Districts overseas. English Freemasonry is a membership organisation of 175,000 people meeting in more than 7,000 Lodges across the globe. Membership is open to any man over the age of 18 irrespective of their background, race or religion, with students also able to join one of 87 University Scheme Lodges. The largest Province in UGLE is Metropolitan in London with many Lodges meeting at Freemasons Hall in Covent Garden which also serves as the Headquarters for English Freemasonry worldwide.
Freemasons’ Hall is a unique art deco building which can date its origins back to 1769 when Freemasons first started meeting at this site. The current building was completed in 1933 as a memorial to those who died in the Great War. It houses 22 meeting rooms including some unique spaces regularly used for major international events and as film locations. The Hall itself provides a magnificent meeting place for UK and international masonic lodges. It is open to both Freemasons and the general public who are provided with both self-guided audio tours as well as guided tours of the facilities. The Museum of Freemasonry with one of the finest collections of masonic artefacts and archives in the world, is housed within the building.

Duties include:
- Undertake various lifting and moving duties in and around FMH and the GQS Properties for either Masonic Meetings or Private Events or for the day-today needs of UGLE and the tenants of FMH;
- Manual handling of goods coming or leaving FMH. Making sure it is delivered to the correct place and signed for.
- Be a part of the team that organises and plans and ensures all room layouts are correct;
- Undertake duties that are allocated to the portering team on Maintain X.
- Maintaining good housekeeping in all storage areas of FMH;
- Check the room bookings system daily and raise any queries as appropriate;
- To check emails for information updates;
- To assist Security opening external doors when needed;
- To actively seek to assist the Maintenance department with various tasks including; helping with deliveries of materials, building/moving mobile towers (potential training to be provided), footing ladders, helping organizing material storage, assisting with L8 water management tasks and logging results (potential training to be provided), perform general building/asset checks and log, assisting with battery door guards and helping engineers with their given/daily tasks;
- To assist the Archiving and Record Management teams with incoming Lodge and Chapter records from the Provinces and Metropolitan and assist with cataloguing the contents and decanting in to the correct storage boxes for off-site storage;
- Report any areas of damage;
- To do all possible to help with energy saving throughout FMH;
- To carry out any other associated duties as required;
- To use a two-way radio within Freemasons’ Hall and be available for call-out in an emergency;
- Be an active part of the response team in the event of an evacuation of FMH including sweeping of floors/areas to check everyone has left and use of evacuation chairs and evacuation lifts;
- Seek continuous improvement in performance and quality standards (of the job/role or the department or the staff as applicable);
- To carry out the duties of the Team Leader if asked by the Head Porter;
- To follow all instructions from the Team Leader in the absence of the Head Porter;
- Carry out any other activities, duties and tasks as directed;
- To act in such a way to as ensure the health, safety and welfare of oneself and others;
- To be clean and wear correct uniform including PPE;
Must have skills:
- Physical fitness and ability to perform the allocated tasks
- Smart appearance – uniform, including any protective work-wear worn while on shift
- Flexibility and self-motivation with good organisation skills, ability to work with little direct supervision and to prioritise tasks if necessary on a daily basis.
- Ability to work in a team and independently with a professional approach which generates credibility and confidence in others
- Excellent communication skills – both verbal and written
- Ability to be vigilant at all times and notice details of what is happening.
- Knowledge of the job and safe working practices (HASAW).
- 5 year verifiable work record
Desirable Skills:
- Minimum of 3 years relevant experience
- Previous experience of working in a historic or listed building and/or a private members environment

Hours:
The successful applicant will work a 35-hour week; however, you will be required to work on a rotating shift pattern.
