On Saturday, June 8th, 2024, a dedicated team from Noah’s Ark Lodge, who met in West Bromwich, embarked on the arduous National 3 Peaks Challenge, demonstrating their physical endurance and commitment to charity. Tom Booth, Simon Martin, Ed De Saulles, Luke Hamblett, Ronnie McGrory, Jordan Gamble, and Martin Matthews all took part in a bid to conquer the three highest peaks of Scotland, England, and Wales.

The charity they were raising funds for, The Friends of Alfie Johnson, is a local non-profit organization dedicated to assisting children with disabilities across The Black Country in the West Midlands. Since its inception in 2009, this volunteer-run charity has positively impacted numerous lives by providing specialized equipment and support to local causes. Luke Hamblett, a trustee of the charity, rallied his Brethren to support this cause.

Preparation for such a formidable challenge began in October 2023. The team undertook regular hikes, gym sessions, and group walks around the Province of Staffordshire. Monthly planning meetings were held after the Noah’s Ark Lodge Junior Lodge of Instruction, often followed by an informal festive board at a local curry house.

Despite facing extreme weather conditions, including up to four feet of snow on Ben Nevis, torrential rain on Scafell Pike, and freezing 40mph winds on Snowdon, the team persevered. Road closures and an unexpected triathlon at the foot of Snowdon delayed their completion time to 26 hours, two hours over the targeted 24.

The journey was not without its toll. Most of the Brethren sustained injuries yet continued to push forward. The team covered a total walking distance of 23 miles (37km) with an ascent of 3064 metres (10,052ft) across three countries, all while dealing with sleep deprivation and the cramped conditions of a 9-seater minibus.

Their efforts were rewarded not just by the completion of the challenge but also by the substantial funds raised. A total of £6,102.00 was collected for The Friends of Alfie Johnson, providing much-needed support for the charity’s ongoing work.

The team rewarded themselves, as has become their custom, with an unofficial festive board in a local pub in Llangollen on the way home.

This incredible journey undertaken by the members of Noah’s Ark Lodge highlights the physical and mental endurance required for such a challenge and the power of community and brotherhood in supporting charitable causes. Through their dedication and determination, they have made a significant impact on the lives of children in need, embodying the true spirit of Freemasonry.

Martin Matthews said,

‘This mountain humbled us’.

Tom Booth added,

‘There were a few key moments and comments that just show the camaraderie and bond of Freemasons. I can’t imagine doing it without you.’
