Suffolk Freemason Awarded MBE for Charitable Work

Posted:
Richard Bowdidge and his wife Nikki were both awarded the MBE in recognition of their work in establishing the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation following the passing of their son Tom, aged 19 in 2013.

The Province of Suffolk was particularly proud to receive the news that Richard Bowdidge and his wife Nikki were both awarded the MBE in recognition of their work in establishing the Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation following the passing of their son Tom, aged 19 in 2013.

Whilst Tom’s story is incredibly sad, his courage and determination during his illness were incredibly inspiring. This included fundraising. He had been so ill – in January 2013, he discovered that he shouldn’t have seen Christmas!! He had, however, adopted a phenomenal attitude, staying positive throughout and continually putting other people first before his own needs.

To date, the Foundation has raised over £1.6 million; this money has created eight rooms and age-appropriate spaces across the country.

Funds have also been used for research to target treatments for teenage cancers and to provide equipment to support families and young people; these funds have included food, heating, iPads, laptops, wigs, and clothes.

In recognising the award, Suffolk’s Head Freemason Jolyon Berry wrote to Richard and Nikki:

Dear Richard

On behalf of the Most Worshipful Grand Master, myself and every member of Suffolk Provincial Grand Lodge and Chapter, I congratulate you and Nikki on being awarded the honour of becoming Members of the Order of the British Empire.  The work that you have done for the Tom Bowdidge Foundation over the last ten years is remarkable, and you deserve to be very proud of yourselves; we are very proud of you.  While nothing can take away the pain and suffering you, Nikki and Tom endured – which no doubt continues for you and Nikki, this recognition must bring some satisfaction.  I hope you are able to enjoy it fully.

In response to the award, Richard said, “I am humbled and proud Nikki has received it as I am aware of how hard she works to fulfil Tom’s vision.”

Richard and Nikki have not been given a date when they will receive their MBEs but are looking forward to their visit to Buckingham Palace.
