In the bustling streets of Camden, Louchavan Lemard, a successful owner of a plumbing and heating company, has made an inspiring journey from Nottingham to the heart of London’s Freemasonry community, discovering personal growth and a commitment to community service along the way.
In this exclusive interview, Louchavan shares his motivations for joining the centuries-old fraternal organisation, dispels common myths, and reveals how Freemasonry has become a cornerstone of his life in just eight short months. From seeking mentorship to finding a structured environment in a chaotic world, Louchavan's story offers a fresh perspective on what it means to be a modern Freemason.
Can you please introduce yourself?
Louchavan: My name is Louchavan Lemard. I currently reside in Camden, northwest London, though I'm originally from Nottingham. I own a plumbing and heating company based in London that provides 24/7 maintenance and repair services. Additionally, I've been a Freemason for about eight months now, so just under a year.
What was it that initially got you interested in Freemasonry?
Louchavan: I had several reasons for joining Freemasonry. Firstly, I had recently moved from Nottingham to London and wanted to meet like-minded people and expand my network. Freemasonry is a diverse community, similar to the people you meet in business, and it helps you understand different communities and grow as a person.
Another important reason for me was the opportunity to be around mentors. Growing up in a single-parent household, I had limited interactions with role models. Freemasonry gave me the chance to connect with other individuals and learn from their experiences.
In today's chaotic world, I find that Freemasonry offers a structured environment based on traditional principles. This structure helps me maintain focus on my goals and values, avoiding the distractions of everyday life.
One aspect I truly appreciate is the clear boundaries within Freemasonry. It provides clear guidelines and operating within them ensures that you are on the right path. In the digital age, where everything leaves a footprint, adhering to the core values of Freemasonry encourages acting with integrity and striving to do the right thing.
So in summary, Freemasonry offers a framework for personal and professional growth, ethical living, and meaningful connections in today's complex world. These factors collectively contributed to my decision to become a Freemason.
How has your experience been as a Freemason, and did it align with your expectations?
Louchavan: Before joining Freemasonry, I didn’t really know what to expect, but today I can say that it has been a great experience so far.
I'm a big believer in mentoring. In fact, I do a lot of work mentoring young adults from disadvantaged backgrounds, sharing my story and experiences to help them see how they can grow and develop.
I've always felt that in life, you're simultaneously a mentor and a mentee. Freemasonry offers me the opportunity to play both roles, though I'd say I'm more often in the mentee position here. And that's great because it helps me become better at what I do in terms of giving back to others.
As for everything else about Freemasonry? Well, it's been quite a revelation. It's turned out to be completely different from what little I might have imagined - in a good way. The experience has been eye-opening and enriching beyond what I could have anticipated.
What is it that you enjoy most about being a Freemason and a member of the organisation?
Louchavan: I really appreciate the opportunity to meet people from all walks of life through Freemasonry. As an entrepreneur, life can be quite isolating, so Freemasonry helps me expand my social network meaningfully.
Freemasonry, has helped me connect with like-minded individuals who share similar values. It's not just about networking but building relationships with people I can trust and respect.
Another aspect I really value is the opportunity to interact with older, more experienced members. There's so much wisdom that comes with age. It reminds me of my time with my grandparents, great-uncles, and aunts. The insights you gain from these experienced individuals are genuinely priceless. Freemasonry gives me a chance to listen and absorb that wisdom.
Lastly, being part of this brotherhood helps me navigate life's challenges more effectively. It makes you realise that whatever you're going through, others have faced similar situations or are currently dealing with them. It puts things into perspective - I'm not unique or alone in my struggles. It's just part of the process of life.
What would you say to someone thinking about joining Freemasonry and why should they join?
Louchavan: First and foremost, I want to clarify that much of what you hear about Freemasonry is simply not true. It's often just jargon. Now, let me tell you who I think Freemasonry is really for:
If you're someone who wants to grow as an individual, add value to society and the human race, broaden your network with positive influences and be around people who will elevate you and those around you, then Freemasonry might be for you. However, if you're not willing to grow, expand your knowledge, or work on becoming a better person, it's probably not the right fit.
In today's world, I believe Freemasonry is more important than ever. It provides stability, guidance, and helps you set boundaries. It serves as a reminder of the do's and don'ts in life.
I especially recommend it for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds or single-parent homes. It's an excellent place to be because it equips you for life's challenges. We all face trauma or difficulties at some point, and that's when we're most vulnerable. Having a strong network around you can make a huge difference.
In my short time as a Freemason, I've witnessed overwhelming support for members going through hardships. It fills me with confidence knowing that such support exists.
Another significant aspect is the global nature of Freemasonry. You can find common ground with people from different countries, communicate effectively, and build meaningful relationships across cultural boundaries.
The benefits are truly immense. It's not just about personal growth; it's about being part of a supportive community that helps you navigate life's ups and downs. Whether you're looking for mentorship, wanting to give back, or seeking personal development, Freemasonry offers a unique platform for all of this and more.
So yes, I would absolutely recommend joining to anyone interested. The positive impact it can have on your life is substantial.
