In Episode 2, Season 3 of Craftcast: The Freemasons Podcast, the hosts welcomed special guest Vas Blackwood, the acclaimed actor known for roles in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Only Fools and Horses, and numerous other productions. The episode provided fascinating insights into Blackwood's journey in Freemasonry and his experiences balancing life as both an actor and Freemason.

Vas's introduction to Freemasonry came through his uncle, a barrister and Freemason in Jamaica and his formal journey began approximately 25 years ago when he was initiated into Hendon Manor Lodge No. 5293. Despite being an actor and receiving numerous suggestions to join the actors' Lodge (Chelsea Lodge), Blackwood chose to remain with his mother Lodge, which he fondly noted was ‘full of accountants.’ His dedication to the Craft has since led him to achieve Senior London Grand rank and serve as a Visiting Officer.

Interestingly, Vas revealed that his acting background didn't initially make Ritual work easier, contrary to what many might expect. He explained that while he gets paid to learn lines as an actor, the Ritual presented a different challenge as it required him to be himself rather than play a character. His journey with the Ritual began in earnest when helping another Freemason who was unable to attend meetings, leading him to master various pieces including the First and Second Degree Tracing Boards. This experience helped him discover a deeper connection with the ceremonial aspects of Freemasonry.

Throughout the conversation, Vas shared how Freemasonry has contributed to his personal growth and professional development. He emphasised that while some might join the organisation hoping to advance their careers, the true value lies in personal development. His journey in Freemasonry has paralleled his creative growth as an actor, though not in the way one might expect. Rather than providing industry connections, Freemasonry has helped him become a better person, which in turn has enhanced his creative work.

For new Freemasons interested in learning the Ritual, Vas offered thoughtful advice based on his experience. He recommended starting with small, manageable portions - perhaps just a sentence or two at a time - and attending Lodge of Instruction regularly. He encouraged newcomers to seek help from experienced Freemasons and to practice while doing other activities, such as exercise. Most importantly, he stressed that everyone must find their own way with time and practice, likening the process to learning a new language.

The conversation took an entertaining turn as Vas shared behind-the-scenes stories from his appearance in the famous 'The Shadow' episode of Only Fools and Horses. He described the experience of working with Sir David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst, and how their professionalism influenced his performance. The episode, which was filmed partly on location and partly in front of a live studio audience, remains one of his career highlights.

The episode concluded with Vas emphasising the importance of personal commitment in Freemasonry, stating ‘what you put in is what you get out.’ He encouraged newer Freemasons to approach Ritual learning at their own pace while maintaining dedication to understanding its deeper meaning.
