Tale of a Master Mason: Liam from Bath

Liam, a 40-year-old footwear designer, joined Freemasonry in 2022, inspired by his family's Masonic roots and a passion for philanthropy. Initially unsure, he now finds it deeply rewarding, valuing its traditions, community service, and strong sense of brotherhood. He encourages others to explore Freemasonry and find a Lodge that suits them.

Liam never imaged that joining an ancient organisation would open doors to lifelong friendships and self-discovery. But two years into his Masonic journey, he has found exactly that.

A 40-year-old footwear designer and writer from Somerset, Liam’s path to Freemasonry was shaped by family ties, personal curiosity, and a desire to be part of something greater than himself. Now, as an active member of the Lodge of Honour, he reflects on how Freemasonry has transformed his life and how he, in turn, hopes to contribute to its future.

Can you please introduce yourself?

Liam: My name is Liam. I am 40 years old, a footwear designer and writer. I’m originally from Harare, Zimbabwe but I have been living in England for about 20 years.

How long have you been a Freemason for?

Liam: I was initiated into the Lodge of Honour 379 in the City of Bath in March 2022 and was raised to Master Mason on 13th May 2024. I believe it was the first Initiation our Lodge held after lockdown.

How did you get to know about Freemasonry?

Liam: My father and brother are both well-established Freemasons in Netherlandic, Scottish (Acacia Lodge 1582), and Irish Lodges based in Zimbabwe. I had been vaguely aware of Freemasonry for many years but was never curious enough to explore it further nor did I settle in one place long enough to 'knock on the door,' as they say. Looking back, I regret not joining 20 years ago as I now realise how much I have gained from it.

What made you join Freemasonry?

Liam: I read a great book, ‘The Billionaire Who Wasn’t’ about Chuck Feeney, a multi-billionaire who gave away his entire fortune anonymously to philanthropic causes, many of which are thriving today. While Feeney wasn’t a Freemason (as far as I am aware), I began to realise how many of the great people who pursued discreet philanthropy and meaningful achievements, happened to be Freemasons.

After noticing the positive impact on my brother and friends since they became members of Freemasonry—from the way they think to the way they respond to every situation—they became better men. I figured it was time to explore it myself. It turns out joining has benefit ed me in ways I never expected.

What did you think about Freemasonry before you joined?

Liam: I thought it was a discreet organisation of men in suits, carrying briefcases, sitting around a table discussing the world’s problems and working on positive initiatives for their communities. In essence, I didn’t know much.

How has your experience been as a Freemason, and did it align with your expectations?

Liam: My experience has been incredibly fulfilling and has certainly met my expectations. I’ve visited Lodges in different towns, cities, and even countries, meeting like-minded people I certainly wouldn’t have encountered in my everyday life.

Some aspects caught me by surprise - the initiation, ceremonies, phrases etc (not to spill any beans) - but not knowing about these beforehand added to the intrigue. There is always something you can learn and an opportunity to step up.

What is it that fascinates you about being a member of the organisation, and how does it impact you personally?

Liam: What fascinates me most is how ancient and widespread Freemasonry is. Its origins trace back centuries and yet continues to play a meaningful role in making the world a better place.

Our Lodge celebrates its 200th anniversary next month, showcasing just how these age-old traditions and symbolism have endured the test of time.

On a personal level, I’ve witnessed Freemasonry's dedication to helping those in need—whether it’s supporting a small charity, a school, or a brother in distress—and that’s incredibly powerful and motivating.

What do you find to be the most rewarding aspect of being a Freemason?

Liam: I get immense joy from the diversity of people I meet. I have met Freemasons of all faiths, nationalities and backgrounds. It’s reassuring to be part of an organisation where everyone is treated equally and with respect.

What would you say to someone thinking about joining Freemasonry and why should they join?

Liam: Freemasonry isn’t for everyone, so it largely depends on the individual. If someone asked me why they should join, I’d simply reply, “Why not?” and invite them to a social event with members of our Lodge. Our Lodge, for example, has the best curry club in the country! There are many other Lodges all over the country, some with specific interests.

Lastly, if you want to explain Freemasonry in a phrase, what would it be?

Liam: Freemasonry is an ancient organisation, rich in symbols and traditions, bringing together seekers of Friendship, Integrity, Respect and Service.

Liam’s story is just one of many that highlight Freemasonry’s ability to forge connections, foster growth, and make a difference. If you’re curious about how Freemasonry could shape your journey, why not take the first step today?
